Social Safety Nets
Social safety nets are defined as federal, state, and local programs designed to assist and benefit individuals. These programs include welfare, housing re-assignment programs, job placement programs, social security, social security disability insurance, legal aid, victim rights advocacy, severance programs, and workers compensation are just some example programs.
These programs, implemented correctly and effectively, are designed to combat structural violence. Many associate safety net programs with preventing poverty, which is a large portion of the work these programs do. But, safety net programs can be more intensive, complex, and effective than just financial contributions. Health care or free treatment options are examples of that.
